GETTING STARTED - PROGRAMMING

There are a lot of great players out there. Unfortunately that does not necessarily make them good teachers. The most fundamental part of my philosophy is that I put a lot of time and thought into making you the best player that you can be. I believe in putting together a PROGRAM for you to get you the best possible results in the shortest amount of time. I do not believe in going from lesson to lesson without a major goal in mind. Whether you are a beginner who knows nothing or you are someone who's been playing for years, I can put a program together for you that will take you to the next level.

PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Yes, there is some truth to this but I believe more in the phrase PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. This means that HOW you practice is just as important as practicing itself. I like to give my students practice schedules that include what to work on and how long to work on each specific area of your playing. It is easy for a teacher to throw you a bunch of papers and say work on this stuff and come back next week. That almost never gets results.

KEY AREAS OF STUDY

The key areas that I will typically work on with someone will include technique (playing ability), music theory, ear training, music reading and repertoire (learning songs). Now, with all these things in mind I will then put together a practice schedule for you that will attack each area. A balanced schedule is important because it is so easy to get side tracked into one area and before you know it you are lacking in another. So, in a nutshell you just have to follow the program, do the work and you will see rapid improvements.

ON BEGINNER LESSONS

Now, a word about beginners. This is a very crucial time in a person’s musical journey. It can go one of two ways. A person can really get fired up about it and get good quickly. Or, they can piddle out and decide it is just not for them. My job is to make sure the student gets to a level of proficiency relatively quickly, otherwise frustration sets in and people tend to quit. They will think that they were just not cut out for it. While getting good at guitar does take time, my strategies will succeed for anyone willing to put in the time.
